A Greeting Card Changed his Day

January 31, 2011 By: The Card Sender Category: Random Acts of Kindness

When you wake up on Sunday morning you don’t expect to be caught up in a phone conversation prior to church. At least I don’t. I like to wake up and chat with my wife, eat breakfast and prepare my mind and heart for my sunday school students. Just as I am settling into my normal morning. I had chatted with my wife, had just about completed my breakfast…then the phone rings.

I hesitate answering it, after I see that the number is from a family member in Ohio. I thought to myself “now, they know I go to church on Sunday morning, what in the world could be so important?” Then I thought, someone could be ill or perhaps d…no, don’t want to go there. I pick the phone up, it’s my older brother. He started talking fast and I could not understand, so I asked him to slow down.

What is it? I said. He slows down and shouted thanks for the greeting card. I almost said what card but then I remembered sending him a card full of faith verses to help him as he was going through some life issues. He was so happy. The thought of his happiness touched my heart.

He finally ended the phone call and I had just enough time to get dressed and leave for Sunday School. You can imagine how I felt. Also the conversation provided a good lesson for my Sunday School class. The greeting card sent eight days ago changed my brothers day for the better.

Everyday we have the opportunity to change a life with a smile, a kind word, a friendly handshake, and yes, a heartfelt greeting card.

Make a Difference

July 09, 2010 By: The Card Sender Category: Random Acts of Kindness

One day while resting at an Alabama rest stop, I observed a chartered bus full of Teen-agers. They were laughing, joking and playing around as they skipped to use the rest area amenities. I stared for a moment and then I went back to thinking about nothing, trying to rest up before getting back on the road.

What seemed like a few minutes but had actually been 45 minutes later, I was awaken by someone shouting, almost screaming at the top of their lungs, “Stop him”, “stop him”. I jumped up and open my door so I could see what was going on. A little boy who had gotten separated from his mom had somehow stumbled across the rest stop parking lot and into the large 18 wheeler parking lot and was now in the path of a large RV.

One of the teen-agers was running toward the little boy who was oblivious of the danger he was in. The older lady was screaming and the mom who has just noticed her son was in danger began to scream also. The RV driver slammed on his brakes, you could feel the sound scratching your bones. Hoping that the teen-ager gets there in time, we stand by. He did. He grabs the child, the RV screeches to a halt a few yards into where the boy was standing. It was clear that if the teen-ager had not risk his life, the child’s life would be no more.

You might be wondering what does this have to do with card sending. Honestly speaking, very little. That teen-ager made a difference for the mom, the son, the older lady that was screaming and for all of us who could only stand-by and pray for the best outcome.

How many times have we stood-by when we could make a difference? We don’t get a chance to save a life everyday but we do get to make a difference somewhere for someone every day. Go make a difference for someone today. Open a door, call an old friend, allow someone to get in front of you at the grocery store and of course be like me and send a card.

Warmest Regards
